Selma man charged with capital murder

A Selma man has been charged with capital murder that happened over the weekend.

Chauncey Smith, 22, was arrested for capital murder and discharging a firearm in an occupied vehicle, according to Selma Police Chief Kenta Fulford and Dallas County District Attorney Michael Jackson.

Smith was arraigned by Dallas County Circuit Court Judge Collins A. Pettaway Jr and remains in the Dallas County Jail with no bond.

Jackson and Fulford said the arrest is from a shooting that occurred at the 2000 block of Bienville Street around 9:40 p.m. Oct. 16.

The victim has been identified as Shajuan Rhodes, 24. Jackson and Fulford both said that Rhodes’ vehicle was shot into multiple times by Smith. Jackson and Fulford both said that one bullet struck Rhodes in the upper left torso. Rhodes died from injury after chasing his vehicle at the 1600 block of Summerfield Road.

Jackson said Smith’s preliminary hearing will be sometime in November.

This is the eighth homicide in Selma for 2020, one less than last year’s total.
