Former Selma High QB dies in accident

A former Selma High School quarterback died Wednesday from injuries sustained in an ATV accident in Montgomery.

Keondre Hope, a junior, passed away at the age of 16. Friends of Hope’s family said that the accident took place Sunday night in Montgomery.

The 6-foot-1 Hope transferred to Park Crossing High School in Montgomery this season.

“I was supposed to be coming to Montgomery to see you start at Park Crossing,” former Selma High assistant coach Calvin Marshall said. “You were so excited and I couldn’t wait to come see my young bull spin that thing and point at you when you drop a dime.”

“I am completely heartbroken by the loss of Keon,” Selma City Schools Superintendent Dr. Avis Williams said. “On behalf of the entire Team Selma family and our Board of Education, we send out heartfelt prayers and support to his family to include his Saints family and friends. He will forever be missed.”

Hope was the Saints’ starting quarterback last year under coach Willie Gandy and four games during Christopher Thomas’ final season as coach in 2018. He made The Selma Times-Journal All Dallas County football team.

“I lost a brother, a person that I owed every offer and star behind my name to,” Saints wide receiver Dion Nelson said.

The Selma High Class of 2022 released a statement on Hope’s death.

“The Selma High School Family would like to express their deepest condolences to the family of our student Keon Hope,” the statement read. “He was a great person, student and athlete. He will be truly missed by faculty, staff, students and players. Our sincere sympathies to his family during their time of bereavement.”
